The Innovators: 2018

KBDN highlights 50 top innovators whose work, creative talents, business acumen and professionalism are currently leading the way for the industry and elevating the kitchen and bath trade.

It’s often said that the only constant in life is change. And, in a fast-paced industry driven by trends, technology, new products and ever-evolving human needs, it’s no surprise that innovation is an essential part of what makes the kitchen and bath industry thrive.

But innovation isn’t just about products, technology or trends. Rather, innovation comes from the people who bring great designs to life: the designers, dealers and industry pros who conceive new ideas, solve difficult problems, forge new business models, find creative ways of helping homeowners experience and embrace their most personal spaces, share their knowledge by speaking, blogging, mentoring and serving their industry, and inculcate design into their communities at large.

and great design has always been at the heart of what this industry is all about. But Kitchen & Bath Design News has long held that it’s equally important to celebrate the great designers, dealers and industry leaders who innovate every day, in myriad ways, both large and small, in order to raise the bar for the kitchen and bath industry as a whole.

For that reason, KBDN is proud to present its second annual Top 50 Innovators list, honoring industry professionals who have made a name for themselves through their creative efforts, leadership talents, business acumen and professionalism.

Nominated by their peers and then reviewed by the KBDN nominating committee, the 2018 Innovators reflect the best and the brightest industry talents – those shining stars who are lighting the way for future generations to come and redefining a multifaceted industry that reshapes lives even as it redesigns homes.

These are the artists who never stop seeking inspiration, the teachers who have never stopped learning, the technology gurus who are always ahead of the curve, the business professionals who understand that innovation is what drives success and profitability, the marketing talents who understand how to re-imagine the very channels of communication – and, most of all, the human beings whose passion drives them to always strive to be better – and in doing so, to make the industry better as well.

Some are long-time industry veterans, while others are young talents still forging their paths; some have showrooms, while others work as independent designers. Many are active in leadership roles, whether through association involvement, educational efforts or community programs. Several focus on a particular market segment or design specialty, where others have found their niche in catering to a broader-based audience, showcasing their innovation in the way they do business, interact with
customers, forge ties with their communities or solve tough problems.

What they all share is an ability to think, work and create outside the box; a fearlessness in advancing their dreams and goals; a gift for leadership; the ability to change and evolve to keep pace with a rapidly changing market, and an extraordinary commitment to their firms, their clients and the kitchen and bath industry as a whole.

On this and the following 12 pages, KBDN spotlights the 2018 Innovators – 50 outstanding kitchen and bath professionals who are changing the industry right now.

November 2018; We hired Patti Johnson Interiors at the beginning of the construction of our new house. She was instrumental in the design and selection of materials and finishes throughout and was an excellent partner with our builder and us every step of the way. She added tremendous value to the final design of our home.

During the construction, she curated a design for every room maintaining a consistent theme and color palette throughout the house. She hand selected a range of furniture options, paint colors, lighting, custom rugs, artwork, and window treatments turning our house into our home. Patti also designed furniture for several custom pieces that she had her contacts make for us for a truly unique result in several rooms. Her eye for detail is amazing and her level of service is unparalleled. We often get compliments on how seamless the design is throughout our home making our guests feel welcomed.

Patti continuously took input so that our home truly reflected our personalities and greatly exceeded our expectations. I would highly recommend Patti to anyone building a home or simply remodeling. You won't be disappointed!!

In 2013, I contacted Patti Johnson, to guide my husband and I through a total remodel of our living room and family room. When we met Patti for the initial visit, we were impressed by her design suggestions and her overall knowledge of the structural aspects and obstacles of this job. We knew we wanted the wall removed between the two rooms but beyond that, we left the design completely in her hands. She listened to our wants and desires, took photos, and requested to meet with our contractor.
Because the focus of the new room was our fireplace and our baby grand piano, Patti made several suggestions with respect to the fireplace and mantel design and quickly suggested a chandelier above the piano and another hanging light in the opposite corner for balance with can lights in strategic places around the fireplace and in the center of the new room. Her suggestions for lighting, her attention to detail with crown molding, wainscoting and paint color for the cabinets, walls, and ceiling was perfect. She immediately developed an excellent rapport with not

only us, but also with our contractor which made the whole remodeling process a very pleasant experience.
Patti’s designs, her choices in lighting fixtures, textile furnishings as well as her suggestions for new furniture pieces were different from our previous taste but immediately became exactly what we wanted.
We are enjoying our beautifully designed new room thanks to Patti’s creativity and her extraordinary attention to detail. She is truly a part of our newly remodeled home.

“Thank you, Patti, for a beautiful and functional kitchen.

As you know, my front door opens directly into my kitchen. It’s the main entry to my home. Previously, our kitchen gave a cluttered and unattractive first impression for visitors.

Your kitchen design gave me a beautiful entry plus a functional work area. Dirty dishes are no longer on display! My new kitchen has so much storage, that even after a year, I still have empty shelves.

The new lighting design plus the new bay window has really brightened up the area. What a GREAT IDEA.

Also, borrowing just 3 feet from my garage to provide me with a dedicated mudroom and laundry room was ingenious!

I can’t really pick one thing that I like the best: the coffee bar, the beautiful cabinetry, the pantry, the butcher block on the island (great for baking!)....

I also really appreciate how you managed the construction, especially after I became ill.

My only regret is that you moved so far away.

“Relationship: Client
Project Date: October 2014
Project Price: $1,000-$9,999
I tried for several years to make our living room feel comfortably cozy without much success. Patti designed a great new space plan that works perfectly! Classic design, comfortable, and very cozy! Patti incorporated the pieces of furniture we loved into our new living room design and we met with her at the Cincinnati Design Center to purchase a few new high end products with her professional discount. I consider the cost of her services a worthwhile expense...we enjoy our new living room every day! - L. Bollman”
